The 5Rhythms® are a simple and profound movement meditation that appeals to the dancer within you, and it doesn’t matter what physical condition you bring.
To help you get started, here are a few tips and golden rules:
USEFUL INFORMATION
- wear comfortable, movement-friendly clothing
- you will sweat and cool down again, so layering is recommended
- and get thirsty, please bring enough water (no glass bottles, please)
THE PROTECTED SPACE
- we move in silence – if you wish to talk, please do so outside the room – we want to focus our attention on our bodies, and talking is very distracting in this context
- whoever comes to dance stays until the end (if you have an appointment halfway through, please come another time instead)
- please be punctual, we start together and anyone who arrives late acts as a brake for the group
WELL-BEING AND SAFETY
- we move without alcohol or other drugs, come sober
- we dance barefoot or in dance shoes, no socks, or only with anti-slip grips
- no chewing gum, sweets, or similar
- we move with open eyes to perceive others in the room
- be responsible for the well-being of your body, respect its limits
- there may be phases where you are rather loud, need a lot of space, or rage excessively through the room; respect others in doing so and ensure that you are also respected if the situation is reversed
- should you suffer from a psychological or physical illness, please contact the teacher before the session/workshop begins
- The 5Rhythms® movement practice can have a very therapeutic and healing effect, but it is not used for the healing of physical or mental illnesses and is not a substitute for psychotherapeutic treatments.
CONTENT
Here you will find a protected space and a little guidance to embark on the moving journey to your authentic expression and follow the magic of your own dance.
It’s about discovering yourself; no one can do or prevent that but you.
- follow your impulses and be open to change
- everyone was a beginner once, forget about others and what they might think of you – it’s never true anyway
- everything that lives is in motion, and what moves changes: so too does the 5Rhythms® practice – expectations are static and rarely met – let yourself be surprised by the music, the people, the exercises, and especially by yourself; it will be different every time
- take the time you need
- when we move, sometimes held-back feelings are released; you are invited to give space to these and to allow others their space too
- normally, there is music at the beginning and uncommented time to arrive – you can use this time to stretch, warm up, or simply move
- then I, or another teacher, will begin to guide through a wave or several, or just one rhythm – always with regard to the energy currently present in the room
